------------------------ JEUGDIGE BirdNerds bij de Batumi Raptors Count 2018 in Georgië

Het is gebeurd. Tijdens onze vogelreis naar Batumi in Georgië werd onze jongste deelnemer, de 13-jarige Hannes, getroffen door een hardnekkig vogelkijk-virus. We waarschuwden vooraf nochtans de papa dat deze reis riskant was op dat vlak, maar die durfde het risico te nemen.
Reisbegeleider Johannes getuigt: "De jonge Hannes bleek zowat de scherpste ogen te hebben van de hele groep. Hij herkende dan ook bijzonder veel vogels en wenste hen steevast een 'goede reis'." Starling-baas Billy Herman reageert: "Die jongen blijft voor de rest van z'n leven verslaafd aan vogels kijken..."
Dat een verdere toekomst als vrijwillige vogelteller in Batumi verzekerd is, leidt geen twijfel.
"Ik kom zeker nog terug om de Aziatische Wespendief en de Kleine Torenvalk te scoren".
Want die laatste moest via fotobewijs toch afgekeurd worden, aldus de enthousiaste tiener.

Just back from a fantastic week in Batumi, Georgia, where we enjoyed the Batumi Birdwatching Festival immensely! The birding around Adjara was superb, with the raptor migration through the 'Batumi Bottleneck' was at times totally unbelievable.
Our biggest highlights were a single days passage of over 60,000 Honey Buzzards, the superb daily raptor variety including Pallid Harriers, Lesser Spotted Eagles and Levants Sparrowhawks, and finding a rare Caspian Plover at the Kolkheti Delta.
Many thanks to the people who made this trip possible and run so smoothly, with particular thanks to Johannes Jansen, who was a star throughout.
A destination we may feature in the near future, so watch this space!

Standaard ZWARTTOPAAS : De bestreping is lang, breed en in lijn liggend, benadert de zwarte kleur (chocolade-zwarte tint). De afwezigheid van phaeomelanine zorgt voor een goed contrast op een gemelaniseerde ondergrond en lichte omzomingen in de vleugel- en staartpennen en in de vleugeldekveren. De schachten zijn helderder dan bij de klassieke.
Duidelijke flankbestreping. Poten, nagels en snavel zijn vleeskleurig of egaal licht gemelaniseerd.
De ogen zijn donker. De vleugel- en staartpennen zijn flink omzoomd.

Standard NOIR TOPAZE : Le dessin long, large et aligné est de couleur noirâtre (chocolat noir).
L'absence de phaéomélanine visible permettra un bon contraste sur un fond mélanisé et mettra en évidence les contours clairs des plumes des ailes, de la queue et de la couverture. Le rachis est plus clair par rapport au type classique.
Les flancs seront bien marqués. Le bec, les pattes et les ongles seront légèrement mélanisés.
Les yeux sont foncés. Les ailes et la queue seront bien marquées.

De vogels uit de zwartreeks vertonen een maximale uiting van eumelanine die, over de gehele lengte van de dekveren, de centrale schacht omvat. Dit zorgt voor een lange, brede en ononderbroken perfect in lijn liggende bestreping.
De poten, nagels en de snavel zijn zwart
De rug en de flanken vertonen goed afgetekende zwarte strepen die afsteken tegen een sterk geoxideerde ondergrond zonder zichtbaar phaeomelanine. Tussen de bestreping is de zuivere grondkleur uitgesproken aanwezig.
De grondkleur zal helder en donker zijn (maar in relatie tot de categorie).
De vogel mag geen lichter gekleurde gebieden vertonen. Het melanine moet vanaf de snavelbasis vertrekken.
Bij de mozaïek is een witte onderbuik vereist. De flankbestreping en koptekening moet aanwezig blijven.

L'oxydation du NOIR doit se manifester au maximum sur le plumage.Les pattes, les ongles et le bec sont noirs.
Le dos et les flancs présentent des stries noires bien marquées se détachant sur une couleur de fond très oxydée et sans phaéomélanine visible. La mélanine doit partir de la base du bec (dessous et dessus).
Pour la catégorie mosaïque un bas-ventre blanc est exigé. La striure des flancs et de la tête doit subsister.

Bij de agaat opaal wordt door een reductie van de zwart-eumelanine de bestreping grijsblauw op een lichtgrijze ondergrond. De poten, nagels en snavel zijn vleeskleurig van kleur.
L'Agate opale présente une réduction du dessin des eumélanines noires qui se manifestent sous une couleur gris bleu sur fond gris très clair. Les pattes, les ongles et le bec sont de couleur chair.

De grote bevedering (schouderveren, staart- en vleugelpennen) is sterk geëumelaniseerd met uitzondering van een fijne omzoming die de lipochroomkleur vertoont.
Maximale uiting van het eumelanine. Grondkleur zeer donker gemelaniseerd (eumelanine en phaeomelanine, gelijkmatig verdeeld over de gehele mantel zonder afbreuk te doen aan het contrast met de grondkleur.
Alle bestreping is bruin geoxideerd.

The Acromelanistic Rare Color Mutation 'Nero Perla' by A Rosenthal

A variant form or allele of the gene which causes albinism is a rare color mutation known as acromelanism (from the Greek word akro, meaning top or point). It may well be responsible for this new Colorbred mutation currently being referred to as Perla.

Acromelanism can be defined as a genetically determined temperature-dependent pigmentation pattern wherein melanin is chiefly deposited at the extremities of the body. Because the functioning of the enzyme tyrosinase within the melanin-producing cells has become dependent on temperature, this means that little or no melanin synthesis occurs in areas experiencing normal body temperature. Hence, melanin is mainly produced at the extremities of the body because those are the areas which are cooler than an animal's normal core body temperature.

Often popularly referred to as the 'Himalayan' mutation, acromelanism is best known in some mammals where its full expression is seen on face, ears, legs and tail. It is responsible for the familiar color pattern exhibited in colorpoint/Himalayan Persian and Siamese cats as well as in such domestic mammals as the 'Himalayan' breeds of fancy rabbits, mice, rats, hamsters and guinea pigs (cavies).

In birds, acromelanism has been well documented by Hein van Grouw of Tring's Natural History Museum as occurring in several species of crow (Corvus), in the Song Thrush (Turdus philomelos), the Common Blackbird (Turdus merula), the Common Starling (Sturnus vulgaris), the Eurasian Tree Sparrow (Passer montanus), in the domesticated “Ring-Necked” form of the African Collared Dove (Streptopelia roseogrisea), as well as in the bird of her study, the House Sparrow (Passer domesticus). As in mammals, in such acromelanistic birds the melanins are primarily deposited in the extremities — that is, on the facial feathering and in the beak, legs, feet and claws, as well as at the ends of wing flight and tail feathers — because these are the areas which are farthest removed from a bird's body temperature. Since melanin production in this mutation is also dependent on the temperature of the environment and not solely on body temperature, in cooler periods during the molt (as well as when the odd feather may be replaced during cooler conditions), some melanin may also be sporadically and irregularly produced in other area of the plumage, such as on the ends of the secondaries and/or on the tertials.

DESCRIZIONE DEI SOGGETTI MUTATI : Nei soggetti in questione le marcature, le striature e le vergature hanno subito una riduzione cosi' drastica da rimanere appena percettibili con una tonalita' complessiva grigio-perla, fatta eccezione per la punta delle remiganti e delle timoniere che risulta melanizzata in modo normale, cioe' scura. L'ossidazione del becco e delle zampe sono tali da poter essere classificati con certezza come "NERI". Gli occhi sono neri. Il sottopiuma e' grigio chiaro. La collocazione della melanina nella parte inferiore del rachide delle penne forti porterebbe a fare pensare che si tratti di un fattore allelico all'onice dai quali derivano, e di conseguenza anche all'opale.

History of Nero Perla : In 2015 a new appearance in canaries – currently named NERO PERLA was discovered by the breeder Carlo Maria Nobili in Monza/Italy. From the pairing of a White Dominant Onyx canary & a White Dominant Black canary the breeder C. M. Nobili noticed a phenomenal result in the first clutch.
One of the hatched chicks had a light-skinned appearance. After the first feathers grew, this nestling pointed as a new colour variant in canaries. At this time, it was not yet clear whether it was a real new mutation or just a modification. At the second breeding round, three light-coloured, same to the first appearance, and one still a white black onyx canary were the result. And in the third and last round of the season 2015 C. M. Nobili got four white black canaries and one black onyx canary as result. In total 13 offsprings, of which 4 were black onyx blacks, 5 white blacks and 4 same offsprings (2 males & 2 females) with an unknown appearance, later named as NERO PERLA CANARY
Another phenomenon was that both parents are from in the ground colour white dominant, but in this case a Lethal-Factor was not discovered. All offsprings are White dominant in ground colour with a good health, the best preconditions to start a controlled breeding in the next breeding season. And finally after the following breeding seasons 2016 & 2017 C. M. Nobili was able to prove that "Nero Perla" is a real mutation with an autosomal recessive inheritance.
After the breeding season 2017, a proud stock of 58 mutations can be counted. Also some darker specimens occured, which are currently named as “Pearl Type 2”. The Pearl Type 2 shows a more marked pattern. Currently there are two colour variants:
° Pearl Type 1, with a lighter melanisation (first occur in 2015)
° Pearl Type 2, with a darker melanisation (first occur in 2017) In fact, these results were not expected.

What are the Characteristics of the mutation Nero Perla so far?
1. Currently the Nero Perla mutation occurs in the black serie. The markings and striations are reduced to a minimum but are still perceptible in the reduced and dispersed melanin areas lying between the striations. This creates an all in all pearl-grey colour, except the tips of the flight feathers (wings and tail) which have normal dark melanin appearance.
2. A great difference by far from all known melanin mutations and thus a unique feature is the distinctive phenotype of the mutation Nero Perla. The nestlings have blue eyes, but darken with age. This mean as adult the eyes appear dark.
3. The oxidation of beak and legs are clearly black.
4. The underflue appears grey.
5. A further feature is melanin colouration around the beak, like a mask, yet not determined by sexual dimorphism, such as in mosaic canaries.
6. In newborn nestlings occurs a depigmentation, making them similar to lipochrome canaries with a white birth plumage and skin. Currently (2018) the mutation is not yet recognized from the Confederation Ornithologique Mondiale (C. O. M.)

Because of the autosomal recessive inheritance, the following results are to be expected in the following mating:
1. pearl x pearl = all pearl
2. pearl x non-pearl = all non-pearl
3. pearl x non-pearl/split for pearl (male or female) = pearl and non-pearl/split for pearl (male or female)
4. non-pearl/split for pearl (male or female) x non-pearl/split for pearl (male or female) = pearl and non-pearl

Currently it is known that there are no intermediates between the Pearl Type 1 and Typ 2. So, the Pearl Type 1 can reproduce a Pearl Type 2. But about the whole inheritance of the Nero Perla mutation further facts and experience must be collected, especially about new the Pearl Type 2. Also the transfer of the mutation is in progress and maybe already in the next breeding season we will see four classic pearl types. As a matter of fact, there is a lot of excitement present and we waiting further reports about the new canary mutation “Nero Perla”.
